2017–2018 Public Seminar Series: Through a Glass Darkly
The Rodina

The Rodina was founded in 2011 by Tereza and Vit Ruller, Czech-born, Amsterdam-based graphic designers. The Rodina works on commissioned design projects, while also experimenting autonomously; exploring ways in which experience, knowledge, and relationships are preserved and produced. Interested in the connections between culture, technology, and aesthetics, The Rodina designs events, objects, and tools. The studio specializes in video, user experience, installations, and visual identities; they have researched performativity within graphic design, applying the term “performative design” to visual communication.

The Rodina’s work has been show at cultural institutions including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Graphic Design Festival Scotland, and the Seoul Culture Station in Korea; their commercial work includes participation on MTV’s award-winning international team. Tereza currently teaches at the Design Academy Eindhoven; Vit teaches at the Royal Academy of the Arts in the Hague. They will visit CADA to discuss the parameters of design as a practice and alternative models for the profession in which designers develop their own agendas and territories.

The UIC School of Design public seminar series serves as a research platform for the school’s MDES program, stimulating broad intellectual inquiry about the values guiding the designer by promoting discourse across industrial and graphic design.
