Kaleb Dean Receives First Place in UIC Image of Research Competition

The master’s thesis project of graphic designer, Kaleb Dean, examines graphic representations of university academic and athletic programs, investigating who is served by these dual identities and how students and athletes are represented. Titled, Ludis et Veritas, Dean’s research extends into study of the use and abuse of student athletes as university human and financial resources.

Dean’s submission to the UIC Image of Research competition was created for the Typeforce 9, a Chicago-based design exhibit that encourages participants to develop new works from their current research and practice. Dean’s image comes out of the 2016 NFL season's controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick. Depicted in the visual code of the American flag, KNEEL, presents the authoritarian view of a graphic emblem as well as jersey numbers which identify the players.

The Image of Research is an annual interdisciplinary competition and exhibition organized by the Graduate College and University Library to showcase the breadth and diversity of research at UIC. Each year, students enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program at UIC are invited to submit an image they created along with a brief précis of how the image relates to the student’s overall research.

In addition to Kaleb Dean's First Place Entry, two other UIC Design Students will be recognized in the exhibition and at the opening reception:
